Game Summaries

21 Oct - Win against a much improved GSC Burn.  Score 2-1.  Continuing to build on the philosphy of simple soccer wins, we started out with a goal by Dylan (Austin assist) within the first 30 seconds of the game.    Dylan added another one later on, but we had many good looks at goal by several other players.    Our defense played a perfect game, denying GSC from even seeing our net very often.   When the did see net, David was perfect in net and withstood some abuse (that resulted in yellow card on GSC).   He was not alone, although the Sting prefer to play a simple game of finesse, if the other team wants to play physical, we are more than happy to accomodate.

This was a fine way to end the season, giving us a solid lock on 2nd place in the Illowa Division.    I'm quite proud of these althletes - they found a few problems in their game in the middle of the season and learned how to correct them.    We are looking forward to building on this even larger for the Spring Season.

Well done, Sting!

14 Oct - Win against East Moline.   Score 4-1.  Last week at the BSA tournament taught these fine young athletes the importance of playing simple - and they executed that lesson with brilliance.   Up 4-0 at half time against a team that had drubbed us a mere two weeks prior, we improved our game and our thinking to play the beautiful game.    Down three players, they all played a very top notch and fun game.   We had goals come from Michel, Voss, Knott, and ???  (Gard or Michel - not sure on that one) - and an extraordinarily strong defense playing behind superlative midfield work who supported some great moving forwards.   From keeper to forward and all points in between, THIS was Sting Soccer.   Well done!

01 Oct - Win against USA.   Score 3-1.  After yesterday's drubbing, the kids relaxed and started playing Sting Soccer.   They played with composure and most people got a taste of new positions.   Communication was good and our passing game was solid.   A few kinks we need to work out before the BSA Tournament, but we are in the middle of a very solid season.

A few game highlights (although I could mention everyone here, I'll keep it to just a few) : Joseph proving that following shots also includes when the keeper is bobbling the ball will give an easy goal.    Our midfields SHOOTING (how many goals have Dylan and Brandon had this season?)  and our forwards making great runs.   Our defense was solid and failry untested.    Thanks to our four keepers (David, Joseph, Austin, and Cory) who volunteered to stay back bored in net.   Click here for photos.

30 Sep - Loss against EMSSC.  Everybody worked hard.   Everyone had some good things out there - and everybody made some bad mistakes at the wrong moment.  Today's game was not Sting Soccer, plain and simple.   This is a game we lost mentally.   Remember folks, this is a game of intelligence and communication.  We need to relax and play with more composure.   Tomorrow's game will focus just on that so we can get our feet back under us for the BSA touranment.  Click here for photos.

24 Sep - Loss against Dubuque.  Score 1-3.  Unfortunately the score does not reflect the game very well.   We came out very, very strong in the first half.   We possessed the ball at least 80% of the first half.    The passing game was absolutely stellar.   However, we suffered from an unwillingness to take shots on goal.   I think some of our players were looking for that "perfect goal" instead of at least having a shot.   Although a bit concerned by the lack of shooting, I was quite pleased with how we owned the first half of play.  Our defense was challenged only on occasion and came away with good possession or a good save by our keeper, David.

The second half brought two changes.   One - we started shooting!   A shot by Brandon was blocked but Dane drilled one home perfectly in the far corner of net giving us a 1-0 lead.   The other change....   well, something I found out after the game.   Some of our hard working players were getting tired (or were woozy from some shots to the head) and tried to tough it out.   But slow feet and being out of position will cost you and Dubuque smartly capitilized by putting three goals in net.    This has taught me as well that I need to be far more aggressive on substitution in the 2nd half.

Granted, we lost the game, but proved to ourselves that we can play outstanding soccer more and more often.   We'll be bringing an even better game against East Moline this weekend - our last tune up game before the BSA Tournament.

10 Sep - Win against the Moline United.  Score 4-3.  We have recently been working on a more creative offensive game plan and it showed with a quick jump to a 2-0 lead.  However, Moline United is a very well coached and solid team.   They came back and gave us a very tough game until the final whistle.

We had scouted this team at the East Moline tournament and knew that to stand a chance in this game we needed to play faster and harder in our midfield than ever before.  When MU has possession, they come down very fast and hard with everyone.   Our mids stepped up and did what was asked of them.   Our forwards were being creative and pulling defenders out of the way.   Our defense stayed closer to home were very solid.   Both keepers made some outstanding saves.   Every substitution brought a new element to our game.

The game started with a quick goal by Brandon followed by our new addition, Tyler.   These two goals were available because of the off the ball work done by others - especially our forwards.  Without them drawing defense, shots like that simply cannot happen.  Most of all, I am pleased with how the kids are TRUSTING each player to be doing their job out there.   It is leading to smarter and less hectic play.

Well done!

20 Aug - Win against the QC Strikers.  Score 1-0.  We played a solid game from the first whistle to the end.   The game started out fairly well matched, but by half time you could see that the Strikers were starting to bend.    In the second half we gambled a bit by pulling some defensive talent to kick start the offense.   It was only a matter of time before a cross bar double bounce free kick by Brandon put the only score on the board.

We had several other people threaten the goal - unfortunately all too many (especially Tyler) seemed to get fouled at just the wrong moment.   The game ended with us pressing even harder against the Strikers.   Solid work one and all!

There were a few mistakes here and there, but everyone had good stuff.   Everyone.   The defense played an incredibly tough game (oh, I like the speed in back!) and the forwards were raising all kinds of problems for the Strikers.  Our midfielders played a good transition game and keepers gave us the shut out.

We'll spend this week improving our passing game - making it a bit sharper.

Extremely well done!

19 Aug - Loss aginst the BSA Revolution.  Score 0-1.  There is no shame in losing to the Revolution - year to year they are a well disciplined and well coached powerhouse.  However, we came so very, very close to pulling out this win.    Aside from the opening score (3 minutes into the game), there was no advantage to be had by either side.    These two teams matched up just about as even as you could imagine.

All we had to do is not wait for the "perfect shot" and really test their keeper and I believe we could have come away from this game with points.

Communication, courage to take the shot, and a sharper passing game is what we work this week.

Well done!
